Ouse Seal SightingWhilst cycling along the riverbanks of the River Ouse near York, looking at access points for possible launch and testing of the new Club boat, I was surprised by the amount of pleasure boats moored along the river banks and the variety of land along the riverside. The biggest surprise of all was awaiting me to the south of the City in the upper tidal area of the river, where alongside patient fishermen on a comfortable exposed sandbank there lay a basking seal. Apparently this is not an uncommon sight at this time of the year as the site is a known area to see migrating Salmon. Whilst I talked with the Fishermen a large salmon leapt clear of the water , giving a positive identification and for me a first sighting of this Fish in the river, the Seal meanwhile took this calmly and was happy to sit with the fishermen awaiting the turn of the tide and his anticipated dinner.
