Has anyone scene my nudibranch? At 9am on Sunday 22nd November a friendly bunch of divers congregated outside Escrick and Breighton club.

Once the group of budding marine biologists had devoured several cups of tea and coffee the information came pouring in. From simple sponges to complex fish we learnt how to identify each organism and put it into its correct phylum.

After a quick lunch break and some more tea and coffee we ploughed on with what I considered the most difficult part of the day… the map reading. Following lots of confusion Jason helpfully suggested a GPS may be a good investment and we moved on to the next section of the course, observation forms. This gave us a chance to show off our artistic side or, in my case, my lack of one.

After a fun filled but tiring day we all left Escrick and Breighton club with a new found appreciation for limpets.

A combination of good food, washed down with lots of laughter and topped off by the antics of some of the more senior members of our diving club were the order of the day for Excalibur’s Christmas Dinner, held at the Windmill Pub, Dunnington last night.

Despite the atrocious rain, dive club members and their partner’s all rose to the occasion, donning their finery and joining together to celebrate Christmas in style. Some members were actually unrecognisable; such was their miraculous transformation from creatures of the blue lagoon to Burton’s shop window models for the evening.

Ice Cold in Capernwray Print E-mail

Well perhaps not ice cold, but certainly a chilly Capernwray.

13 seasoned Excalibur divers headed across country to the tropical delights of Capernwray for the traditional crazy pre Christmas splash. Tom had his first experience of the delights of cold water, and survived to tell the tale (his story will follow very shortly... check back soon). Martin took the role of quiz master for a little surface interval fun. Cylinders where swapped around so just about no one was diving with their own by the end of the day. A good day out was had by all... just on the journey home now... with just time for a quick change before out for the Xmas meal, and a couple of beers!

I woke up early with excitement & anticipation! After a 2 hr journey, we arrived at a very cold & damp Capernwray.  Stuart showed me the facilities & the dive site, which was a very good set-up.

After a few trips to the Gents, I was ready to go!

I was expecting the temperature to be very cold, but once we were all kitted up & in the water, it was not as bad as I was expecting but neither was it the Caribbean. The first shock was putting my head in the water to get used to the temperature.  Once that was out of the way we started our first dive, which was to approx 7.5m there was many large Trout swimming around which came close enough for a tickle! We swam to the edge of the shallow part then looked in the abyss of the deeper part & could only see the bubbles from the other divers. We did some further swimming & buoyancy checks before coming across some plastic horses! It certainly was surreal sitting on a plastic horse 5-6m underwater.
