When I was asked at the beginning of the year to organise a trip to St Abbs in October I wasn’t overly worried. After all how difficult could it be? A couple of phone calls to Paul and Rachel at Rock House, stick the trip on the planner and wait for people to come forward with their money. Or so I thought! Everything went fine to start off with, I made the booking and people put their names on the planner as interested – great, no problem, er well it didn’t quite work out as I’d hoped. |

Why Excalibur is such a great club |

As long as I can remember, I have suffered from motion sickness. I was car sick as a child and even now I sometimes have to ask my husband Gordon to pull over and let me drive. I have spent an entire 17 hour ferry crossing lying prostrate on my bunk whilst the others wander about and enjoy the facilities of the ship. I don’t go on amusement park rides and sit and wait whilst Gordon and the boys queue up and enjoy their ride. So bearing this in mind, it would seem that SCUBA diving is a crazy choice of hobby but regardless I learnt to dive three years ago. As a person who doesn’t give in easily, my routine before diving is to take a concoction of ginger and seasick tablets (I have tried them all including ones you buy abroad that are not legal in the UK). |

Are you over 18, of average fitness, live in the York area, and always wanted to try SCUBA diving?
Perhaps you have watched 'Britain's Secret Seas' and thought- 'wouldn't it be great to do that'. If so, then take the 'plunge' and come and have a try-dive with us. We are holding try-dive evenings on Sundays 4th, 11th and 18th September at a swimming pool in Escrick, where you can come and see if diving is for you. If you try it and would like to continue your training with us, we would be delighted to welcome you to Excalibur, a friendly and sociable SCUBA diving club based in York. Once trained you will be encouraged to dive with us at dive sites around the UK or why not join us on some of the diving holidays planned abroad. You will see fabulous fish, fantastic wrecks and have a great laugh with us too. There is no maximum age limit so you are never too old to try something new! Get in touch with us today (you can use the 'Contact Excalibur' link above) and book your try - dive! |

Gaping Gill Trip |

Some time ago I found out that the Craven Pot Hole Club sets up camp at Gaping Gill near Clapham to allow the general public to go down 325 feet in a Bosuns’ Chair, whilst a small stream goes over your head, to visit an enormous cave as big as York Minster, Over the last 4 years I have taken several divers (daft enough to walk the total of 5 miles get a little wet and learn a lot about the history of the cave) to experience this and on Saturday seven of us brave souls went and had a really good time ( as luck would have it the weather was great ). When we got back to Clapham, (I having endured much abuse about being a mountain goat on the way back) we managed a snack lunch before continuing on to Kirby Lonsdale to dive the River Leven. We divers are supposed to keep together in the water but I’m afraid with the river current this isn’t always possible so at various stages we launched ourselves into the river with its fairly fast current. I’m glad to say we all surfaced safely. I found the experience very exhilarating, one or two found it a ‘challenge’, but the general consensus was they would like to do it again sometime. Well I reckon “God willing and a fair wind” I will repeat the ‘experience’ next year and anyone daft or brave enough to join me won’t be disappointed.
