I joined Excalibur SAC last summer, following a recruitment drive by Pat at the Copmanthorpe Gala.I was already a PADI Open Water diver, and was interested in the cross over training to BSAC Ocean diver. I was really impressed by how friendly and welcoming all the club members were, and I was soon undertaking the crossover training. There are too many people to thank for my warm reception and training, but special thanks go to Pat for her warm welcome, Dave Garnett for his excellent instruction and Kirsteen for organising it all. With all the pool training sessions behind me, members of the club lost no time planning several trips to develop what we had learned. |

Well, 6am came and my alarm went off. Now I’m not usually a fan of 6am but this morning was different – yes, it was the day I was going to have a go at my first open water dive at Capernwray. So, I sprung out of bed and awaited my lift. Kirsteen landed and we packed the car and we set off. The journey over was full of chats about this and that, all the time though my mind full of anticipation of what on earth this day was going to be like. So eventually we landed at Capernwray (an hour early) and we got in to the car park. |

Against all advice Pete and I took a midweek trip to Capernwray. It rained so hard that as we kitted up, it was doubtful if we would have enough air in 15litres to get to the waters edge. Bread in hand to feed the trout, the water looked clear but at 9 degrees felt quite cold on the face. Hardy Pete was in his new semi-dry but I had more sense in full dry. The fish went berserk with all this food and just to say thanks to Excalibur, one started to snog Pete and the evidence is captured in the picture. Had a brilliant dive with good vis and found nearly all the sunken treasures in a straight line from Lord Lucan to the Cessna. My Viper computer had a battery failure. Very off feeling since relying on it so much for the last 3 years. Had to think what to do before remembering the depth gauge on the instrument consoel. Pete had time of dive but I really wish that I had had a watch with me. Capernwray fitted a new battery at a cost of £32 Ouch. Overland Underwater do it for £23. Second dive confirmed it was working fine but a lesson had been learned. |

I had wondered if a second year in a row at the racecourse might be an expensive luxury too far for our annual dinner. When Lucy told the committee just a couple of weeks before, that she had less than twenty people wanting to come my fears seemed likely to come true. However my pessimism was proved unfounded by the final results, and although we didn’t have quite the same number as last year the evening was very well attended. Lucy, yet again, is to be congratulated on her organisational skills and powers of persuasion (particularly getting John to do the evening’s entertainment – but more about that later!). The food was, as last year, excellent and the whole evening went extremely smoothly. |

Steve and I booked on a trip to Malta in October 11, with a varied group of technical divers from around the Yorkshire region, organised by Ray McKee from Hull. Briefly these are my main impressions of the trip. We booked the flight with Air Malta, they give a very good rate for additional baggage that is booked in advance, as well as the 20Kg of hold luggage and cabin bags Steve and I shared 96Kg of extra baggage allowance, very useful as we were both using rebreathers which always necessitate larger amounts of kit. |
