So Pete's prayers paid off. For anyone wanting five to seven metres of vis off the Tyneside coast, follow Pete's example; kneel and face Mecca beforehand and hey presto! Sneaking off on a working Tuesday, the fab four - Pete, Dec, Martin and Hugh - crammed into the long-suffering Mrs V's trusty car and headed to Brown's Bay for 40 minutes of beautiful diving. Lobsters, edible crab, large scale wrasse, and even a friendly pipe fish kept us amused on the 15 minute fin along the reef to find the wrecks of the Butetown and Zepheros. Needless to say we never did find them, but no matter - Pete's navigational skills remarkably got us back exactly to where we started (more luck than judgement?). By 11.30 we were in the queue for haddock, chips, mushy peas, white bread and a pot of tea at an excellent eat-in chip shop in Tynemouth. Easy diving - and a great day out. Tips for others considering the dive - go weekdays and get the place to yourself. Aim to be in the water 30 minutes before high tide, and be prepared for a tiring clamber back up those steps to the roadside. Finally, if Martin is to sleep in the car on the way home, encourage him to give the beans a miss! |

Set off early hours of Saturday for Anglesey in our new car, skipper wants us there for 11 o'clock, we aim to be there for 9.30, sorted! As we start I’m reminded by Ann that I've forgotten Jan, apologise for not explaining Jan’s driving our old car to drop off en route to its new owners. Car dropped off successfully and all 3 of us enter Wales ahead of schedule, hooray! Removable towbar decides to remove itself from a car in front of us and put hole in our fuel tank, pull off onto side road and pour 60 litres of diesel onto road. Two fire crew, two police cars, two AA vehicles and council gritting lorry later we are on way back to York on a transporter. |

Well what can we say about this one?
Firstly ... some good diving, for those who arrived! Secondly ... a fuel tank, a tow bar, a car alarm, a wrist seal, a drysuit boot, repeated journeys too and from Wales, and a cheesecake! These are just the highlights ... I'll get the full tale together very soon. |

I took the opportunity to travel over to Anglesey on Friday afternoon to miss the travel chaos of Friday evening. This also avoided the shock an early start Saturday. Andy and Dave where about an hour behind in heavy traffic. Dave eyeing up the beer crate longingly! My decision to leave earlier was paying off, as I arrived at the campsite to find Stuart discussing the much talked about ‘Cheesecake’, shortly followed by the cheeky little drink. As more of the group (Tracy, Paul and Terry) arrived, some of us took the opportunity to chew the fat and put the diving world to rights, eventually sending Bev off to bed… there is apparently only so much diving talk you can listen too. |

Angus Carlisle joined Excalibur Sub Aqua Club in 1996 after returning to the UK from the United Arab Emirates. He came as an Advanced Diver and Advanced Instructor and was part of the development of Excalibur from a small club of friends who had broken away from York Sub Aqua Club to a club that was eventually commended by BSAC for its progression as a training centre. During his time at Excalibur Angus saw the development of divers from beginners to instructors, the arrival of a rib and compressors, regional, UK, international diving trips and holidays and the children of diving members learning first to snorkel and then becoming divers in their own right. He also introduced various drinking games into the club and still has the photos to prove it! |
